The Nominating Committee of Synod Council for the election of a bishop was proposed and approved by Synod Council at its meeting on 24 January 2023.  That Committee has met and discussed, among other things, the Constitution which governs the election of a bishop (Number 9 of the Constitution).  The qualifications for a candidate of bishop (Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario) are age (minimum 30 years and maximum 70 years), ordained ministry status (at least seven years ordained a priest), and ecclesiastical appointments and experience.

In the Diocese of Ontario, in order to be on the ballot, a nomination for a candidate must be made by a member of Synod, and supported by nine other members, all members of Synod, either clergy and/or lay. Each member of Synod can only nominate or support one individual.

  • The date set for the election is Saturday April 29, 2023, at St George’s Cathedral.
  • The deadline for nominations is Wednesday March 29, 2023, 5:00 pm.
  • The names of the nominees will be released on Saturday April 15, 2023.
  • Online town hall meeting with the nominees on April 19 at 7-8:30 pm.

Attached to the bottom of this page is the relevant section from the Constitution, a Nominating Form, and endorsement form.

Completed forms (with all endorsements) should be scanned (with original form[s] kept) and sent to: election2023@ontario.anglican.ca, or mailed to: Nominating Committee, Anglican Diocese of Ontario, 165 Ontario Street, Suite 4 & 5, Kingston, ON K7L 2Y6.

Your prayers are invited for this election, for the Nominating Committee, the electing Synod, and the candidates.  With the assistance of the Holy Spirit, our next Bishop will be duly elected and succeed our current bishop, The Rt. Rev. Michael Oulton, upon the new bishop’s installation.

Blessings,
The Ven. David Selzer,
Secretary of Synod
