The Diocese of Ontario Synod Council met in person on September 22, 2026, at St. Paul's, Kingston, under the chairmanship of Bishop William Cliff. Bishop Cliff announced the appointment of Elizabeth Matthews as the Anglican Church Women representative to Synod Council. Following opening devotions led by Dean Doug Michael, members reflected on themes of the Holy Spirit as a source of love, life, and transformation. The Rev. Brad Beale shared an update on the response of the Belleville community following recent tragic events, highlighting signs of hope and support offered to the local Jewish community. 

In his Bishop's update, Bishop William noted upcoming diocesan and church-wide events, including National Truth and Reconciliation Day observances, staff team health assessments, the October House of Bishops meeting, and the ordination of Robert Stewart at St. Lawrence, Brockville, on November 1 at 7:00 pm. Council also received updates on the development of diocesan guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence and learned that the heating project at St. George's Cathedral has been temporarily paused pending required permits and electrical upgrades. 

A significant portion of the meeting was held in-camera to discuss confidential matters. Following this session, Council ratified actions taken by the Executive Board in August, including approval of a roof repair and associated interest-free loan for St. Paul's, Cardinal; authorization of a feasibility study to explore community support for the restoration of St. Mark's Church tower in Barriefield; and permission for St. John's, Bath, to sever and sell a small parcel of residential property adjacent to the former rectory. 

The QII finances were presented by Joyce William. Accounts that are tracking differently than budget were highlighted and explanations provided. The projected forecasts are looking good to be within the forecasted budget at year end, even with some upcoming one-time expense that will appear in QIII and QIV, including our software provider SAGE and the current migration. Joyce reported that the Finance committee is set to meet for the first time in October to review accounts and consult on the budget for 2027. 

Members received and approved the financial report, and the meeting concluded with prayer. The next Synod Council meeting is scheduled for October 27, 2026, at St. Paul's, Kingston, with both in-person and online participation available.
